The Sustainable Development Council (SDC) today conducted an online knowledge session for mainstreaming the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in provincial planning and development processes for provincial level development planning officials representing the 09 Provincial Councils.

The realization of the ambitious 2030 Agenda for SDGs depends effective planning, implementation and monitoring of SDG targets at the sub-national levels as many of the component services essential to meeting SDG targets such as water provision, sanitation and primary healthcare etc are either services shared between the national and sub-national governments or indeed the responsibility of the sub-national and/or local governments. Aligning national and provincial plans for vertical policy coherence is a critical accelerator for achieving many of the SDG targets.

During the Session, the Guide Book on SDG Mainstreaming in Provincial Planning recently developed by the SDC was introduced to the participants. The Guidebook includes components such as mapping of SDGs against provincial subjects and functions, guidelines on identification of priorities, stakeholder identification, strategic plan preparation according to national SDG targets and indicators, preparation of provincial financing strategies and resource mobilization and monitoring, evaluation and reporting.

The awareness session was conducted by officers of the SDC. Speaking at the Session, the Director General of SDC, Chamindry Saparamadu emphasized the importance of subsidiarity and good governance at all levels for implementing the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development.

Over 152 officers from the planning divisions of the 09 Provincial Councils attended the session.
