Director (Development) of the Sustainable Development Council of Sri Lanka, Prasadhika Bassnayaka shared Sri Lanka’s experience in setting national sustainable development targets at the Regional Workshop on Evidence-based Follow-up and Review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development held in Bangkok, Thailand from 17 to 20 July.

The workshop, organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), brings together statisticians, national planning experts, SDG coordinators and relevant stakeholders to discuss their experiences in assessing national progress against the SDGs. The main goal of the workshop is to strengthen the national capacities in analyzing and utilizing SDG data for follow-up and review of the implementation of the SDGs Agenda at the country level.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development serves as a blueprint for member States to progress towards inclusivity and sustainability. At the midpoint of the 2030 Agenda, countries are urged to better assess their progress in achieving the SDGs.

Being the apex body created by law to ensure Sri Lanka’s achievement of the SDGs, the Sustainable Development Council of Sri Lanka recently called on all ministries to identify nationally appropriate SDG targets. Through regular engagement with the line ministries, progress has been made in setting over 180 national sustainable development targets relating to social, economic and environmental outcomes including ending poverty and combating climate change.
