Technical workshop conducted for the Fisheries Ministry and the State Ministry

Fisheries Ministry

The Ministry of Fisheries is responsible for transforming the Sri Lankan fishing industry towards becoming a high contributor to the national economy by fulfilling the local fish consumption needs, uplifting the socio-economic status of the fisher community and building strong fisheries enterprises that can cater to the global markets. The activities of the Fisheries Ministry and the State Ministry have a direct contribution towards promoting responsible consumption and production (SDG 12) and sustainable use and conservation of sea and marine resources (SDG 14).

In line with the policy guidelines towards building a ‘self-sufficient fishery sector’ contained in the national policy framework ‘Vistas of Prosperity and Splendor’, a technical workshop was conducted on 24th February 2021 by the Sustainable Development Council to provide guidance to the Ministry regarding preparation of SDG mainstreamed Action Plan and programmes and to strengthen the capacity for related SDG data generation and compilation. The workshop was attended by senior officials of the Ministry and the State Ministry as well as the institutions under the purview of the Ministry and State Ministry, including Fisheries and Water Resources Department, National Aquatic Resource Development Authority, National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency - NARA. The technical discussions were led by officials of the Sustainable Development Council with contributions from the Department of Census and Statistics, the UNDP and FAO.
