Education for Sustainable Development is recognized as an integral element of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 on Quality Education and a key enabler of all other SDGs. Educational Institutions can champion the integration of sustainability education in their curricula and empower learners of all ages and levels with the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to address the interconnected global challenges that we are facing today. Education that is transformative would enable informed decision making and the capacity for individual and collective action for a better world.

Partnerships are vital to promote education for sustainable development. The Sustainable Development Council (SDCSL) engages with academic and higher learning institutions and libraries to promote sustainability education, research and innovations for Sustainable Development in Sri Lanka.

Our recent discussions with the NSBM Green University and the University of Kelaniya focused on promoting the ‘Green University’ concept in Sri Lanka as well as on collaborative research and developing course curricula and dedicated certification programmes on Sustainable Development.

Libraries facilitate individual and societal progress through access to knowledge, skills, and spaces. SDCSL initiated discussions with the Sri Lanka Library Association - SLLA to utilize its network of members to disseminate important information and case studies on Sustainable Development, provide a learning space on key aspects relating to Sustainable Development as well as to promote the ‘Green Library’ concept across Sri Lanka.
