The inaugural meeting of the Steering Committee on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16 was held on 30th June 2021 at the Ministry of Justice under the patronage of the Hon. Minister of Justice Hon. Mohamed Ali Sabry, PC. Achievement of SDG 16 and relevant targets require an integrated approach towards progress review, data compilation and analysis as well as formulating policy reforms. Secretary to the Ministry of Justice Mr. M.M.P.K Mayadunne, Director General Mrs. Chamindry Saparamadu and officials of the Sustainable Development Council and the senior officers representing Sri Lanka Police, Sri Lanka Coast Guard, Department of Census and Statistics Sri Lanka, Department of Prisons - Sri Lanka, Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Department of State Accounts, The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, Department of National Budget, Election Commission of Sri Lanka, Registrar General's Department, Human Rights Commission Srilanka- HRCSL , Right to Information Commission, Office of National Unity and Reconciliation and Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Coun & Loc Gov were present at the discussion.
By 2030, Sri Lanka aims to achieve the SDG 16 to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels. 12 SDG targets, including, reducing violence and related death rates, ending abuse, exploitation, trafficking violence and torture of children, promoting rule of law and equal access to justice including alternate dispute resolution mechanisms, reducing bribery and corruption, strengthening public access to information promoting and enforcing non-discriminatory laws and policies for sustainable development, are expected to be achieved under Goal 16.
