Transforming Sri Lanka’s development into a sustainable process that ensure an inclusive, thriving, peaceful and environmentally conscious nation both locally and globally.


WHO WE ARE

The Sustainable Development Council of Sri Lanka (SDC) is the government agency tasked with monitoring and evaluation of government organisations that are working towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals that have been undertaken by Sri Lanka, in accordance with the United Nations (UN).

We, at the SDC, aim to consistently facilitate, monitor and review the development of Sri Lanka’s sustainable growth in order to ensure success of National Policy and Strategy, in compliance with Global Pledges and sustainable environmental standards.

Environmental

Maximizing the supply of the Earth's limited resources in a sustainable manner, while minimizing our carbon footprint and overall environmental impact.

Social

Creating opportunities for everyone that are in harmony with the environment, to ensure no one is left behind.

Economy

Ensuring National Policy and Strategy on Sustainable Development are in conformity with the SDGs and associated targets in place until the end of year 2030.

Ensure the successful implementation of Sri Lanka’s National Policy & Strategy towards Sustainable Development.
Our Vision

To successfully facilitate, monitor and review the mechanisms implemented to ensure the success of National Policy & Strategy on Sustainable Development, towards achieving Sri Lanka’s pledge, as a member state of the UN.

Our Mission

Facilitate the achievement of national, regional and international commitments relating to sustainable development to ensure the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Living as set out by the UN in 2015.

POWERS OF THE COUNCIL

  • Formulate and Review

    Formulating and reviewing National Policy and Strategy. Working alongside the nine Provincial Councils, the Cabinet of Ministers as well as other relevant parties.

  • Issue Guidelines

    Issuing guidelines relating to sustainable development for all relevant parties: including ministries, provincial councils and those undertaking new development projects.

  • Identify

    Identifying sustainable development standards, mechanisms and ecological footprint indicators.

  • Promote Sustainable Development

    Promoting sustainable development in key areas: including research and development, innovation, education and awareness.

  • Introduce and Follow up

    Introducing and following up on methods, audit mechanisms and all other matters relating to sustainable development.
